Belgium Flagge

The Belgian Flag: A Symbol of Independence and Unity

Origins and History

The Belgian flag is a tricolour consisting of three equal vertical stripes in black, yellow, and red. The width-to-length ratio is 13 to 15. The flag was adopted in 1831, shortly after Belgium gained independence from the Netherlands.

Inspiration and Symbolism

The flag was inspired by the French tricolor. The black, yellow, and red colours are taken from the colours of the Duchy of Brabant, a region that played a key role in the Belgian Revolution.

Black

Represents strength, steadfastness, and mourning.

Yellow

Symbolizes prosperity, wealth, and agriculture.

Red

Stands for courage, patriotism, and the blood spilled in the fight for independence.

Current Use

The Belgian flag is flown on all government buildings and embassies, as well as by private citizens. It is also used as a symbol of Belgian identity and unity.
